Behavioral Interviewing
Behavioral Interviewing
Behavioral interviewing is the process of exploring a person’s past performance for insight into what that person can achieve in the future. Originally adopted in the 1970s by a small group of psychologists, behavioral interviewing is now extremely common. Some estimate that one-third of all American companies use this interviewing technique to some degree or another.
At its core, behavioral interviewing works because most workers–and indeed most teams–display predictable patterns. In country lore, this concept is expressed by the proverb “you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.” In other words, by simply taking a snapshot of an interviewee’s history, you can fairly accurately appraise that person’s competence.
